10 easy paths to self destruction

1) Eat Junk

Last year, at least 400,000 Americans managed to kill themselves based almost solely on what they ate. Heart disease is the country's number one killer and, while some of that comes from genetics, most of it's due to the fat-laden, sugar-heavy junk we put in our bodies. Looking for the most effective, probably most enjoyable way to do yourself in? Have another doughnut. And make it cream-filled!

2) Smoke

They don't call them cancer sticks for nothing: Tobacco-related illnesses are America's number two killer, and the most preventable. But if you're bent on putting the kibosh to healthy living, go ahead and light up; just one cigarette will immediately increase your blood pressure and decrease the circulation to your extremities. Imagine what you could do with a pack

3) Watch TV

Not only is television entertaining, it can keep us on the couch for hours at a time several days per week. The average American spends a full 9 years of his life glued to the boob tube, years that could otherwise be spent exercising. Resist the urge! Being an obese, sedentary TV-addicted couch potato makes for speedy self-destruction, though you may be a little smarter (if you watch those nerdy science channels).

4) Stress Out

Creating more stress in your life is a great way to invite all kinds of diseases to attack the body. When you're chronically stressed, the adrenal glands are forced to work overtime and eventually exhaust themselves, inhibiting the immune system. So go ahead and worry about everything from the color of your socks to whether dinner will be ready on time. Your hormones won't know what hit them.

5) Drink a Lot

The occasional drink of alcohol, especially wine, can be beneficial to your health, many studies suggest. But if you're looking to do yourself in, overdo the two-drink-per-day limit and imbibe heartily. Besides alcoholism of course, too much booze causes liver damage, diabetes and is the root cause of nearly 100,000 deaths per year.

6) Drive a Lot

If people wanted to increase their chance of surviving 'til a ripe old age, they'd fly everywhere. Driving kills more people aged 1 to 35 than anything else, a statistic that could drop to near zero if everyone just stayed home. But how fun would that be? So hit the road, forget the speed limit, yak on your cell phone?or worse, eat?and don't buckle up if you're anxious to become part of this popular statistic.

7) Have a Lot of Sex

Most people agree that sex in itself isn't so bad, it's how you do it that could mean life or death. The smart self-destructor doesn't use protection, ignores the partner's sexual history and shuns the annual medical exam. Twelve million Americans contract sexually transmitted diseases every year, many of which can leave the victim infertile. Killing yourself and preventing new births: there?s a two-fer!

8) Dumb Down Your Brain

Reading, doing crosswords and tackling sudokus are all risky behaviors if you're looking to avoid Alzheimer's. The degenerative brain disease attacks almost everyone who lives long enough, though mind games and puzzles are known to ward off the effects.

9) Ignore the Doctor
Many Americans agree that their health is hardly worth finding thirty minutes among 526,000 for that once-per-year physical exam. It's a good tactic if early disease detection and important medical consultation are going to get in the way of your Tommy Lee lifestyle. If you don't want to hear the doctor tell you our other tips for self-destruction are unhealthy, just don't go.

10) Sacrifice Sleep

Inadequate sleep (less than 7 or 8 hours a night) has been tied to many different health problems, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Mental fatigue is also as big of a risk factor for vehicular accidents as alcohol. And just think of all the time you'd have for destructive behavior if you shunned the zzz's altogether!

The most annoying words - by Fiona Chan (must read!)

. Tuesday, November 17, 2009
0 comments

'Anyway, you know, whatever - it is what it is, at the end of the day.'
This is the most irritating sentence in the English language, according to a poll in the United States last month.

'Whatever' - or, as it is more commonly said, 'What-evvv-urhhhhh' or 'wadeva' in Singapore - proved to be the most grating of the five phrases that were thrown up.

While I completely agree that these words and phrases all deserve to be eradicated from everyday speech, I must say I found the poll a bit wanting.

After all, my own mental list of annoying words, compiled over years of totally unplanned research, easily runs into the hundreds.
If I had to give a prize to one for the (dis)honour of being the most annoying, it would go to 'anything'.

Don't get me wrong, it is a perfectly acceptable word when the person who uses it really means 'anything'. Like, for instance, me, when I say 'I don't have anything to wear'.

But what some people don't know is that the word 'anything' is more commonly used as a trap. Indecisive people say it to lure you into a false sense of agreeability, and then they slowly kill you with frustration.

This is how it goes:

Me: 'What do you want to eat for dinner?'

Indecisive Person: 'Anything.'

Me: 'Okay, Thai food?'

Indecisive Person: 'Uh... I don't really feel like Thai.'

Me: 'Japanese then?'

Indecisive Person: 'No, I had Japanese for lunch.'

Me: 'How about French food?'

Indecisive Person, who by now is proving to be irritatingly decisive: 'Yuck, I hate French food.'

Me, on the verge of death by exasperation: 'Then what do you want to eat?'

Indecisive Person: 'Oh, anything, up to you.'

A friend of mine has developed a foolproof way to deal with this. Once his dinner partner says 'anything', he will insist on going to McDonald's and brook no further discussion. He doesn't mind eating the dinner in total frosty silence just to make his point.

Then there are words that are not inherently annoying - except when they are used wrongly, which seems to be every single time they are uttered.

Case in point: 'Literally'. This word aggravates me so much that whenever someone uses it in my presence I get an ulcer. Not literally.

But seriously, if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say 'literally' when what they actually meant was 'really', I would have about $147. Literally.

Another similarly abused word is 'whereby', which is a particular favourite with insurance and property agents. In fact, they often use the two words in the same breath.

A property agent once told me: 'The nearest station whereby you can take MRT is across the road and 10 minutes' walk to the left. It's literally just next door.'

Whenever I complain to people about my word woes, they usually just make it worse.

'Don't stress,' they will say - a useless injunction if I ever heard one.

Still, that's better than my personal anti-favourite: 'chillaxing', as in 'Hey, why are you so tense? Chillaxing, lah.'

That's right - it's not just 'chill' or 'relax' or even 'chillax', but 'chillaxing'. Even if the word made sense, it would be ungrammatical.

Every time I hear this, the only thing I want to chillax is the speaker's head. With an ice-pick.

I even have a most annoying letter of the alphabet: K. Not because I hate koalas, or kangaroos, or karaoke, but because K is a completely unnecessary abbreviation of the already abbreviated 'OK'.

This is most frequently used after I have typed out a very long and complicated SMS to a friend about exactly where we should meet, at what time, and where the cheapest and nearest parking is available.

His reply: 'K'. Without a fullstop, because typing any more than one letter is just too much effort.

I really don't understand why a word that originally comprises only four letters ('okay') has to be shrunk to two letters, and then one.

I suspect that in time, people won't even bother to type anything at all. They'll just send an empty SMS to signify consent.

Then again, if that ever happens, I suppose I have the perfect response already: 'wadeva'.

the day smalltomato team went out for supper...

8 habits that can shorten your life

Working too hard without any rest can compromise your health, says Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, Wong Pang Ong.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, he listed 8 habits that people had that made the biggest damage on their lifespan.

1. Not visiting the doctor when ill
Professor Wong said that viruses from certain illnesses can wreck havoc on the heart and may stimulate a heart attack.

2. Not sleeping enough
Insufficient sleep can lower your immunity, rendering you more susceptibile to illness.

3. Irregular meals
Having erratic meal times can cause blood sugar to dip and cause problems with the endocrine system.

4. Lack of communication with family members.
Professor Wong said that mental well-being is important for a happy life.

5. Sitting for prolonged periods of time

Sitting in one position for too long a time does not stimulate blood circulation and is bad for the joints.

6. Staring at the computer screen for too long
It is one of the reasons why people develop spine and neck problems, he says.

7. Not eating breakfast
Skipping the first meal of the day can cause irregular blood sugar and insulin levels. Abnormal insulin levels maintained over a prolonged period can cause diabetes. People who eat irregular meals are prone to kidney stones.

8. Not going for full body checkups
Ignorance can be a bane because it makes one unaware of what goes on in one's body, says Professor Wong.

Top 10 Memory Improvement Tips

.

Before you study for your next exam, you might want to use a few strategies to boost your memory of important information. There are a number of tried and tested techniques for improving memory. These strategies have been established within cognitive psychology literature and offer a number of great ways to improve memory, enhance recall, and increase retention of information.

1. Focus your attention on the materials you are studying.

Attention is one of the major components of memory. In order for information to move from short-term memory into long-term memory, you need to actively attend to this information. Try to study in a place free of distractions such as television, music, and other diversions..

2. Avoid cramming by establishing regular study sessions.

According to Bjork (2001), studying materials over a number of session’s gives you the time you need to adequately process the information. Research has shown that students who study regularly remember the material far better that those did all of their studying in one marathon session..

3. Structure and organize the information you are studying.

Researchers have found that information is organized in memory in related clusters. You can take advantage of this by structuring and organizing the materials you are studying. Try grouping similar concepts and terms together, or make an outline of your notes and textbook readings to help group related concepts..

4. Utilize mnemonic devices to remember information.

Mnemonic devices are a technique often used by students to aid in recall. A mnemonic is simply a way to remember information. For example, you might associate a term you need to remember with a common item that you are very familiar with. The best mnemonics are those that utilize positive imagery, humor, or novelty. You might come up with a rhyme, song, or joke to help remember a specific segment of information..

5. Elaborate and rehearse the information you are studying.

In order to recall information, you need to encode what you are studying into long-term memory. One of the most effective encoding techniques is known as elaborative rehearsal. An example of this technique would be to read the definition of a key term, study the definition of that term, and then read a more detailed description of what that term means. After repeating this process a few times, your recall of the information will be far better..

6. Relate new information to things you already know.

When you are studying unfamiliar material, take the time to think about how this information relates to things that you already know. By establishing relationships between new ideas and previously existing memories, you can dramatically increase the likelihood of recalling the recently learned information..

7. Visualize concepts to improve memory and recall.

Many people benefit greatly from visualizing the information they study. Pay attention to the photographs, charts, and other graphics in your textbooks. If you don’t have visual cues to help, try creating your own. Draw charts or figures in the margins of your notes or use highlighters or pens in different colors to group related ideas in your written study materials..

8. Teach new concepts to another person.

Research suggests that reading materials out loud significantly improves memory of the material. Educators and psychologists have also discovered that having students actually teach new concepts to others enhances understanding and recall. You can use this approach in your own study by teaching new concepts and information to a friend or study partner..

9. Pay extra attention to difficult information.

Have you ever noticed how it's sometimes easier to remember information at the beginning or end of a chapter? Researchers have found that the position of information can play a role in recall, which is known as the serial position effect. While recalling middle information can be difficult, you can overcome this problem by spending extra time rehearsing this information or try restructuring the information so it will be easier to remember. When you come across an especially difficult concept, devote some extra time to memorizing the information..

10. Vary your study routine.

Another great way to increase your recall is to occasionally change your study routine. If you are accustomed to studying in one specific location, try moving to a different spot to study. If you study in the evening, try to spend a few minutes each morning reviewing the information you studied the previous night. By adding an element of novelty to your study sessions, you can increase the effectiveness of your efforts and significantly improve your long-term recall.

Suntec to transform into hub for Youth Olympic Games events

my paper
By Jake Chng

SUNTEC Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre will be a hub for activities at next year's inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

It will host six sports - boxing, fencing, judo, taekwon-do, wrestling and handball - as well as exhibitions for the Games' Culture and Education Programme.

Selected mainly for its top-class facilities and easy accessibility, Suntec is also one of only two venues to hold both YOG sporting events and the Culture and Education Programme. The other venue is *scape Youth Space.

"I think this would be a good challenge to Suntec and a good opportunity for us to show our flexibility and quality of infrastructure that we have," said Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan, during yesterday's announcement of Suntec Singapore as YOG sponsors.

"It's right in the heart of town and, with the six sporting events it is hosting, we are very sure this would be a good experience for the athletes, officials and spectators."

Suntec expects 8,000 to 10,000 visitors daily during the YOG, and has already made plans to dedicate the entire convention centre to the Games.

7 thoughts that are bad for you

. Tuesday, October 13, 2009
0 comments

1) Cynicism

Cynics who tend to be suspicious and mistrustful of others, a character trait that scientists refer to as hostility, may have an increased likelihood of developing heart disease. "These aren't necessarily hot-headed people, but people who are more likely to read into people's behavior as some hostile motive," Stephen Boyle said during a telephone interview.
In a study of more than 300 Vietnam veterans who were healthy at the study start, Boyle found that those who scored high on measures of hostility were about 25 percent more likely to develop heart disease.

Boyle and his colleagues think that hostile individuals might experience more stress, which can cause spikes in an immune-system protein called C3 that has been linked with various diseases, including diabetes. In fact, the participants with higher scores on hostility showed an increase in these proteins while the non-hostile men showed no such increase.

2) Lack of Meaning

If you lack a sense of purpose, your stay on Earth could be truncated. A study involving more than 1,200 elderly participants who didn't have dementia at the study's start found that those who indicated having a high purpose in life were about half as likely to die over the study period, which lasted up to five years. The results, published in the June 15 issue of the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, held regardless of a person's age, sex, education and race, along with level of depression and neuroticism.
"Persons with high purpose readily derive meaning from and make sense of the events of their lives, and likely engage in behaviors and activities that they deem important," said study researcher Patricia Boyle of the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago.

Some other research has suggested that people with a higher sense of purpose may have different levels of stress hormones, better heart health or improved immune systems, though more research is needed to firm up any of these biological mechanisms, she said.
The opposite also holds: "The findings from our study suggested that people who no longer set and work actively toward goals or enjoy their day-to-day activities (how they spend their time) are those with greater mortality risk," Boyle told LiveScience.

3) Fretting

People who are highly neurotic -- constantly worried and anxious, and prone to depression -- die sooner on average than their chill counterparts. And a recently reported study of nearly 1,800 men followed over a 30-year period suggests that's partly because neurotics are also more likely to smoke. Perhaps having a cigarette eases anxiety, said study researcher Daniel Mroczek of Purdue University in Indiana, adding that such a short-term payoff might not be worth it if it kills you down the line.

4) Lack of Self-control

Late for appointments? Can't keep your desk organized? No self-control? These seemingly benign qualities could take a toll on your health.
A review of more than 20 studies and nearly 9,000 participants revealed people who are conscientious -- organized and self-disciplined, as opposed to impulsive -- live two to four years longer than others. Study researcher Howard S. Friedman of the University of California, Riverside, suspects the boost in lifetime can be attributed partly to the fact that highly conscientious individuals are less likely to smoke or drink to excess, and live more stable and less stressful lives. The study is detailed in a 2008 issue of the journal Health Psychology.

5) Anxiety

The jitters can put a strain on your noggin, research suggests. Compared with the highly frazzled, individuals with a mellow demeanor who are outgoing may be less likely to develop dementia, which can be caused by Alzheimer's disease and other illnesses. The claim is based on a study that followed more than 500 elderly individuals for five years. Among the outgoing extroverts, dementia risk was 50 percent lower for participants who were calm compared with those who were prone to distress.

6) Gloom and Doom

The gloomy, inhibited person is not just at a disadvantage socially, but also physically.
A preliminary study of more than 180 patients suffering from peripheral arterial disease (plaque buildup in the arteries) showed participants with so-called type D, or distressed, personality, had an increased odds of dying sooner than other people. Type-D people are more likely to experience negative emotions while at the same time hold in their feelings.
The researchers, who detail their work in the August issue of the journal Archives of Surgery, suggest the personality type is linked with the body's immune system as well as stress response system.

7) Stress

Whatever you do, don't let this list worry you! Research is showing that prolonged stress can be deadly, and if it doesn't do you in, workplace stress can increase your chances of heart disease, flu virus, metabolic syndrome and having high blood pressure.
A study of nearly 700 Israeli workers found that those who experienced job burnout (when work stress becomes unmanageable) were nearly twice as likely as others to develop type 2 diabetes, in which a person's body becomes resistant to the sugar-regulating hormone called insulin.
And while a job promotion might boost your income, it also stresses you out. British researchers recently found that when people get promoted, they suffer on average about 10 percent more mental strain and are less likely to find time to go to the doctor.

Plight of migrant workers :(

TWC2 has produced two videos on the plight of migrant workers in Singapore.
It's not easy for these migrant workers to be leaving their hometown to work overseas just so to earn more money for their families.
Yet, their fate seems to lie in the hands of irresponsible employers.
They are normal beings like us and definitely don't deserve such treatment.

[add-on on 26th november]
we (12 of us) visited the outlet at plaza singapura.

the manager offered us :
main course/pasta + soup of the day + drink + one scoop of icecream = $13 nett for one person (promotion on top of their 30% off lunch promotion)
i.e. we are paying only $3.20 more for an additional soup and one scoop icecream which in my opinion, is more worthwhile as compared to having "free flow drinks" cos' i dont and cant really take that much of softdrinks.
It's got us pretty satisfied too. :)

However, i must say that the manager hasn't been very truthful.
He told us that 30% lunch promo is only from 11am to 2.30pm but he's now extending the offer to us even though we entered swensen's at about 2.45pm.
When i checked the website again just now, it's stated to be from 11am to 5pm for the 30%  lunch promo!
sales tactics?
Fortunately, he's got the relatively good service to make up for it..

ANYWAY, try going in bigger group for greater discounts!

pepperlunch

I personally feel that pepperlunch at their original pricing plus that fact that I don't take beef, is pretty bohua (not worth the money).
Now that student meals are available, I don't mind going back there again! (now that it seems more wuhua.. hiak)
Hopefully they are not cutting down on the quantity to match the student price..

Has any one tried? Do leave us your comment~ much(uncountable)thanks heh
